State competitor Carlie Queen performed well throughout postseason play.

SCA junior Carlie Queen made SCA history at the State Golf Tournament this year, by placing higher than any other SCA Varsity Girls’ golf player in the history of the program. Queen, who has played golf only three years, shot a respectable 189 in two rounds, which was 26th best in Class 1 competition play. After factoring in ties, her final placement was 46th out of 90 state golfers. The Class 1 State competition was held October 12-13 in Joplin, MO, at the Twin Hills Country Club.

“It was a difficult course playing more than 500 yards longer than any played this season,” commented SCA Varsity Coach Christie Queen. “The strong winds along with the narrow, heavily tree-lined fairways provided a very challenging setting.”

Postseason play proved stronger than the previous season for the SCA Varsity team consisting of four returning juniors, Gabi Bagunu, Sarah Blumer, Noelle Miller, and Carlie Queen. Each player recorded their best district scores on September 28th at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course. Queen shot an impressive 85 and received All-District honors with a 3rd place finish. Both Queen and Blumer advanced to Sectionals for the second year in a row, which was held at the Indian Foothills Golf Course on October 5th in Marshall, MO. With only 12 individual players advancing out of Sectionals to State, Blumer narrowly missed qualifying for State by 7 strokes. Queen shot a solid 84 and placed 6th to earn a spot at the State competition.

“This has been an exciting season filled with continued growth in each player’s skill,” commented SCA Varsity Coach Christie Queen. “Having two athletes qualify for Sectionals for a second-straight season provides belief that hard work pays off. With Queen as an All-District Medalist and qualifying for State, we are showing that SCA can compete strong. We know we’re on track for great things at SCA!”
