Varsity Volleyball Ends Season of Growth

image119 The SCA volleyball season kicked off after a lot of change, from graduating five seniors last year to having new coaches for both varsity and junior varsity teams this year. With SCA Alumnus Kara Toetzke as the new Varsity Coach, Coach Toetzke enjoyed the tremendous growth the team experienced during the 2016 season.

The team was successful both on and off the court this season. With an average GPA of 3.8, the SCA team worked hard to be the best in the classroom as well as on the court. They finished 2nd in the Crossroads Conference with a 7-1 record, losing only to the Kansas Class 2-A State Champions Heritage Christian Academy. Finishing their season in District play, the team battled hard and took a tough loss to Barstow in a third game with a score of 25-22.

The season ending record of 8-14-3 has left room for growth for next season. Four seniors will graduate this year including Taylor Hurst, Sami Buzan, Madelynn Fristo, and Kimberli Stokes. With a large number of athletes returning, we are excited to see what 2017 season holds for us.

The volleyball athletes worked so hard this season and it did not go unnoticed by other teams. We had four girls named to conference teams. Lenetta Lee and Rayna Cross were both named to 1st Team All-Conference, Glori Gronberg was named to 2nd Team All-Conference, and Kyndal Bowie was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Postseason awards included Lenetta Lee–1st Team All-District, Rayna Cross 2nd Team All-District, and Glori Gronberg 2nd Team All-District. Four athletes were named to the 2nd Team All-Region–Rayna Cross, Lenetta Lee, Kyndal Bowie, and Glori Gronberg.
