(Lee’s Summit, MO) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is pleased to announce that Senior Sam Chinnery has advanced to Finalist standing in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. This distinction places him in a group of roughly 15,000 students representing less than one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors.
Last fall, Chinnery was notified that he was in the top 3-4% of the 1.5 million entrants and had qualified as a Semifinalist, meaning that he was one of the highest scoring entrants in Missouri. Chinnery advanced to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and other requirements: including a letter of recommendation, student activities and leadership, and his own essay.
“SCA is honored to have been notified that Sam was selected as a National Merit Scholar Finalist,” said SCA Secondary Principal Joe Hesman. “This is a major accomplishment and one that comes from years of hard work and perseverance. We know that God created Sam with talents and skills and it has been amazing to see how he is using his God-given talents to perform at such a high level! We are also excited that MIT has offered him a full-ride scholarship that he has accepted. God has great plans for him.”
Approximately 7,600 Finalists will be selected to receive one of three types of National Merit Scholarship awards. National Merit Scholarship winners will receive their offer between before mid-June.
