SCA Hosts Foundations and Frameworks Creator

(Lee’s Summit, MO) Summit Christian Academy (SCA) was pleased to host Dr. Kevin Washburn, creator of the research-based and research-supported instructional reading program that is utilized at SCA- Foundations and Frameworks (F&F). Dr. Washburn is Executive Director of Clerestory Learning and author of Architecture of Learning, which is a lesson plan mapping system which moves students through the learning process: from initial experience, to comprehension, to application of information, to intentionally using the information in multiple contexts. F&F uses this model to teach story elements and reading comprehension skills.

Dr. Washburn received a tour of SCA and spent his day visiting kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms, observing the implementation of his curriculum, and meeting with faculty and staff members. Dr. Washburn made a list of recommendations, goals, and suggestions which SCA Elementary Principal and teachers will be reviewing in order to continue progressing the effectiveness of the curriculum.

“I was encouraged that every teacher was able to ask questions and clarify best practices for reading comprehension,” shared SCA sixth grade teacher Mrs. Chandra Brownlee, who hosted Dr. Washburn for the day. “As we seek to provide excellent academics, we continue to refine our skills as teachers. This was just one opportunity of many throughout the year that will increase student achievement at SCA.”
