Lee’s Summit Man Named Missouri Outstanding Teacher

SCA long-time History teacher Greg Finch, pictured here with Caroline Greene, NSDAR State Historian, was recently named the NSDAR 2022 “Outstanding Teacher of American History” for the state of Missouri. He is now in competition for the national award.

(Lee’s Summit) Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is proud to announce that long-time Secondary American Government, Geography, World History, and American History teacher Greg Finch has been named the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) “Outstanding Teacher of American History of 2022” for all Missouri schools, public and private.

DAR’s Outstanding Teacher of American History award honors notable full-time teachers of history (and related fields such as social studies, government, and citizenship education) in public, private, and parochial schools, grades 5-12. These teachers have demonstrated excellence in readily sharing an incisive knowledge of American history, being committed to their students, fostering a spirit of patriotism and loyal support of our country, relating history to modern life and events, and requiring high academic standards at all times from their students.

In February, Finch was made eligible for the award by being named the local Lee’s Summit “Outstanding Teacher” by DAR’s Prairie Chapter. This made him a contestant at the state level against 105 Missouri Chapter winners. As the state winner, Finch is now a finalist in the running for the national prize.

“In addition to conveying excellent academics, it is my desire to bring a passion to my classes that is meaningful, contagious, and fun,” shared Mr. Finch. “It is a great honor for me, representing a private Christian school of excellence, to be considered worthy of such an award. I appreciate the opportunity and privilege families have given me to partner with them in the training of their children. Our Social Studies Department has a vision for conservative Constitutional values and this award is a wonderful affirmation of that mission.”

“Mr. Finch is one of the best teachers I have worked with in 30+ years of school ministry,” shared SCA Head of School Chris Hahn. “His heart for Jesus, his love for the children he serves, and his passion for History contribute to him being a Master Teacher. I have been asked, ‘If you could go back and take a class at SCA, what would it be?’ I would be excited to sign up with Mr. Finch.”

Mr. Finch was named the SCA Teacher of the Year in 2018 and also the Teacher of the Year for the Great Plains Alliance of Christian Schools in 2019.  He has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and History and a Master’s degree in American History from the University of Missouri Kansas City.  He has taught at SCA since 2001 and is an Adjunct Professor of History for Southwest Baptist University.

Finch was presented the honor at the DAR’s state convention, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kansas City April 23.
