Our School Spirit Lasts An Eternity

The mission of the SCA Theatre Department is to inspire students to achieve their God-given potential in theatre - including both acting and technical expertise - through excellent productions and classes in a professional and challenging environment. In junior high, students may take Exploring Theatre and Acting Experiences. In high school, students have many semester-long choices available to them - Acting and Improv, Acting Workshop, Storytelling, Theatre Production and Theatre Repertory.

In addition to theatre classes, SCA Theatre has three extracurricular productions each year in which students may participate, either as actors or as part of the student-led technical crew. Each year there is one high school play, one all-secondary production, and one junior high play. Every other year, the all-secondary production is a musical, co-directed by Trissa Lucht, vocal music director. The junior high one act festival is directed by David Keller.

In the past, SCA has produced a wide variety of comedies, dramas, and musicals including Mary Poppins and Shakespeare’s The Tempest (19/20); Korczak's Children, The Potting Shed, and Pride@Prejudice (18/19); The Sound of Music and Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular (17/18); Rehearsal for Murder, The God Committee, and Shakespeare on the Green (16/17); Cyrano de BurgerShack and These Shining Lives (15/16); It's a Wonderful Life, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Coarse Acting Show (14/15); Meet Me in St. Louis and Harvey (13/14); Acts of God, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, and Fantastic Mr. Fox (12/13); Hello, Dolly! and God's Favorite (11/12); Korczak's Children, 12 Angry Jurors, and M*A*S*H (10/11); Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella and Sabrina Fair (09/10); Peter Pan & Wendy, The Dining Room, and Pride Prejudice (08/09); My Fair Lady and Towards Zero (07/08); Diary of Anne Frank and Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing (06/07); The Foreigner and The Sound of Music (05/06); An Ideal Husband and God's Favorite (04/05); and Anne of Green Gables and The Coarse Acting Show (03/04). Each year, the most advanced students present One Act Night, a collection of student-directed (and often student-written) short plays. In 2012, the Theatre and Worship classes united to write the book, music, and lyrics for Shelter(ed): A Student-Written Musical. In 2020, SCA students adapted Shakespeare's The Tempest into a musical, writing fifteen original songs. SCA Theatre is also a member of the International Thespian Society and the KC Cappies, and has participated in the Missouri State Improv Intensive. Please e-mail SCA Theatre Director Emily Stam with any questions. She would love to tell you more about SCA's exciting theatre program.

In the area of debate, speech, and forensics, SCA offers a variety of classes in both junior high and high school. Mr. Mark Harris teaches and also coaches the junior and senior high speech and debate teams. To learn more about speech, forensics, and debate, please e-mail Mr. Harris.
