Mr. Harris joined the SCA faculty in 2018. He worked for 36 years as a classroom teacher and debate/forensic coach in public schools including 13 years at Parsons High School in Kansas and 20 years at Raytown High School. He has qualified/coached participants to 35 national speech/debate tournaments including a number of finalists, a National Champion, as well as the Stennis National Championship and the NSDA School of Excellence Award in 2002. Eleven of his students achieved Competitive All-American status (top 25 in the nation) since its inception in 1989. Thirteen of his students achieved Academic All-American status (high GPA, ACT, and speech/debate performance) since its inception in 2000. Two students he coached were named District Student of the Year for their contributions, both in school and in the community, since that award was created in 2008. Mr. Harris has been awarded the Golden Apple-Outstanding Teaching Award at Raytown High School, been nominated several times for the Disney Teacher’s Award, and is presently one of only  21 coaches since the inception of the National Speech and Debate Association in 1925 to attain the Seventh Diamond Award for Coaching.
